WHAT THE PROS DON'T TELL YOU
Why is Skywriting
So Hard?
In an age of Instagram, texting and digital advertising — the ‘lost’ art of skywriting may seem like an old-fashioned way to communicate.
But no matter how traditional it may seem, there’s something about skywriting that still commands our attention (and our Instagram feeds). It’s hard not to be captivated as we watch a message unfold in the sky.
But if you’re a pilot and have tried your hand at skywriting, you know it’s really, really hard. Only a handful of pilots in the world know how to do it.
After all, there’s no ‘official’ training program or certifying body. You need ideal weather conditions and the ability to draw letters backwards without seeing how it’s all connected. It’s a lot like drawing a picture in the dark.
Until now, the only way to learn has been through years of expensive trial-and-error, or being taught by one of the few remaining professional skywriters, who tend to protect their craft. We don’t think the ability to skywrite should be a secret.
With SmokeOn, we’ve simplified and standardized the entire skywriting process so that virtually any pilot can create unique sky messages quickly, precisely and consistently — just like the pros who’ve been doing it for years.
HOW DOES THE APP WORK?

Pre-Flight
- Customized setup based on real-time, local conditions
- Program everything on the ground before you ever take off
- Based on your airplane's speed and abilities, the app can recommend a setup that will get you started right.

Calibrate Wind Drift and Go
Even skywriting newbies know that wind drift can play havoc with the readability of the final message. Instead of guessing, the app accommodates the discrepancy in location (caused by wind drift) by first having you fly a 90-degree corner…or what we call an ‘Initial L’.
You simply fly the first leg of an ‘L’ (where the app directs you), watching the smoke as you go. Make a turn and connect the second leg visually.
Press a button at the point of connection, and the app instantly calculates the difference between where you expected to be and your actual location. The app then fine tunes your final message location — and you’re ready to fly your first letter!
- Set the wind drift and you’re ready to start skywriting
- The app responds to your visual adjustments in real time
- All you have to do is maintain altitude, follow smoke on/off directions and keep flying each leg until the message is complete
Multiple Jobs and Post-Flight
- Create messages for any location
- Pre-program multiple jobs before you take off
- Focus on flying and have the proper spatial awareness to create precise and consistent messages time and again

Plain Text. Plane Easy.
Think skywriting is too complicated or something only a handful of highly
skilled pilots can do? Think again.
